More Changes to Digital Desktop Wallpaper!

We have been busy making further changes to the site over the past week and this will continue during the next couple of weeks until we are completely happy with the layout.

This is a brief summary of the changes we have made and why they have been put in place:

1) The width of the page has been extended to accommodate 98% of the screen resolution of the user. The previous layout was fixed at 800 pixels, but we felt that format had become far too restrictive. We studied our stats and found that the most popular screen resolutions of users is 1024 x 768, 1280 x 800, 1280 x 1024 and 1440 x 900. As a result of this research we decided to change the layout to restrict scrolling and to try to fill much more of the screen above the fold.

2) The colour scheme has changed. We have tried experimenting with different colour schemes and have never been entirely happy with the results. We prefer the white background we currently use compared to the previous black background, so we will be sticking with white for the foreseeable future. We are complimenting this with blue fonts and highlights for the time being, but don’t be too surprised if this changes in the future!

3)  We have added site-wide links. Previously all of our links where contained on the links page, we have now decided to add a brief list of our best partners onto each page.

4) A search box. We have added a search box into the top left hand corner of the screen. This will allow you to search the site for the information or wallpaper you require. The search function is powered by Google and it will only search this site.

5) We have coded in XHTML and CSS. This won’t mean much to people who do not know much about the construction of a website, but to those who do…CSS has given us the fluidity for the layout and controls the design whilst XHTML has been the language of choice for this rebuild. Most of the pages have been validated thus far and the rest will be validated very quickly. We could have done it before going live, but we were too keen to get the new release online so we decided to validate some pages retrospectively.

6) New StumbleIt! button on every page. StumbleUpon! is a great website and we have added a button to every page to enable the page to be added to StumbleUpon! very quickly. Just click StumbleIt! and fill in the details. If you have never heard of StumbleUpon!, please read this article. You can see our Stumbles here.

That’s about it.

We hope you like the new layout? We would love to hear your views on it as your feedback will make the site better.

There are still some changes to be made to the movies section and to the odd page. These changes will be made over the next couple of weeks; we need to spend some time on our other projects at the moment so the completion of this rebuild will have to wait a little while. We have tried to complete everything in sections, so it shouldn’t look too odd when visiting the site.

Once again, we hope you like the new look. Do send us your comments.

Fasticon is a website that offers software developers and designers a whole plethora of cool Web 2.0 icons. They offer a range of computer related icon packages each containing 165 icons costing $249 to $349.

But the good news is they also offer a range of icons as freeware, which means you can download and use them on your website or blog for free. We are using an RSS feed icon on this site (see the orange circle at the top of the page?).

As well as covering the usual icon suspects (del.icio.us, stumbleupon, rss etc) there are also a few quirky packages thrown in. Take a look at these great examples.

Digital Desktop Wallpaper gets a Makeover

Regular visitors to the site will have noticed that we have recently given the site a makeover and changed the basic page colour from black to white. We kinda liked the black background a few years ago when the site was first launched, we thought it made the colours of the wallpapers stand out more. However, black has become very dull in the recent past and the clean look and feel offered by a white background now offers the website user a better experience. We hope you like it? Let us know what you think.

What is a desktop wallpaper?

You probably already know the answer to the above question, but if you do not, here is an explanation;

A desktop wallpaper is the digital picture that is displayed on a computer screen while it is being used. This image can be changed at any time by right clicking a picture in an internet browser and selecting “set as background” or by choosing an image from your hard drive. To use an image from your hard drive (using Windows); open the folder containing the image you want to use as your wallpaper in thumbnails mode (open the folder, in the file menu at the top, select ‘view’ then ‘thumbnails’ from the drop down menu) then right click and select “set as desktop background”.

Many desktop wallpapers are created using computer programs like Photoshop and Bryce. These allow the user to manipulate existing images into something new and distinctive or create a new image from scratch. The 3d modelling power of Bryce is used to create the 3d landscapes of imaginary places and their inhabitants! Their are some excellent 3d artists around and credit should be given for their creativeness. The same can be said for digital photographers.
